Tournament Format

Betz Botz Robot Combat events currently use one of two tournament formats: Modified Swiss or Double Elimination. It will be specified in the event description which format is being used for each weight class. (Modified Swiss will be the more common of the two moving forwards.)

Modified Swiss

  • The competition begins with 3-4 qualifying rounds utilizing the Swiss format. In each round, robots are paired with opponents based on their current performance, ensuring that each robot competes against others of similar skill and record.

  • Robots earn points in the qualifying rounds based on their match outcomes. A knockout victory awards the winner 100 points and the loser 0 points. A judges’ decision awards the winner 70 points and the loser 30 points. Forfeits are counted as knockouts.

  • After all the qualifying rounds have concluded, the top 4 or 8 robots (depending on the tournament size) with the highest point totals advance to the single elimination tournament.

  • In the single elimination tournament, robots are seeded based on Swiss ranking in a bracket-style format. Losing robots are eliminated, and winning robots advance through subsequent rounds until a champion is determined. The two semi-finals losers will have a match to determine 3rd place.

Double Elimination

  • All robots start in the winners bracket.

  • The losing robot in a winners bracket match will move to the losers bracket.

  • The losing robot in a losers bracket match is eliminated from the tournament.

  • The robot that wins the losers bracket will need to defeat the robot that wins the winners bracket twice to win the overall event.
